Journey’s Multi-Sensory Suite Coming Soon

Book a Tour

We’re proud to announce the upcoming launch of Journey’s Multi-Sensory Suite—a thoughtfully designed space that will soon become part of our dedicated Journeys Memory Care Program at The Terraces at Tuckerman Lane. This immersive environment is specially created to comfort, engage, and enrich the lives of residents living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

As memory loss progresses, it can become harder to connect through conversation or traditional hobbies. But the senses often remain a powerful source of comfort and meaning. Multi-sensory environments tap into this potential, offering residents a calming yet engaging space to explore light, sound, touch, and scent—on their own terms.

Research shows that these environments can do more than soothe; they may help reduce agitation, apathy, and other challenging behaviors, improve mood, enhance communication, and increase attention spans by promoting beneficial changes in brain chemistry (Lorusso et al., 2023; EBSCO Research Starters, 2024; Maseda et al., 2008; Occupational Therapy Practice, 2024). For those who may experience anxiety, restlessness, or isolation, Journey’s Multi-Sensory Suite will provide a gentle, therapeutic alternative.

Part of a Personalized Approach to Memory Care

The sensory suite is an extension of the individualized support offered through Journeys. This signature memory care program is tailored to meet each resident’s unique needs and stage in the dementia journey—helping them maintain independence, preserve their sense of self, and feel joy in daily life. Within a secure, supportive environment, tools like the sensory suite allow our team to deliver care that is as compassionate as it is purposeful.

Benefits of Journey’s Multi-Sensory Suite

  • Relaxation & Emotional Comfort
From soft lighting and calming sounds to gentle textures and familiar scents, the suite creates a peaceful atmosphere ideal for easing anxiety. Residents can enjoy the space on their own or with the support of staff during periods of agitation or overstimulation.
  • Cognitive Engagement & Sensory Stimulation
The room will feature soothing visuals, ambient music, tactile materials, and other interactive elements that gently stimulate the brain. Activities are simple, accessible, and meaningful—no experience or special skills required.
  • Therapeutic & Social Opportunities
The suite will also serve as a flexible setting for therapeutic programming. Team members may guide residents through reminiscence activities, light movement, or cause-and-effect games that support motor skills, memory, and self-expression.
  • Autonomy & Choice
Residents will be free to explore and engage with the suite in a way that feels right to them. Whether quietly observing changing light patterns or interacting with textured objects, they’ll be able to connect with the environment in a way that feels empowering.

We look forward to introducing this new multi-sensory room in the coming months as part of our ongoing commitment to enhancing quality of life in memory care. Thoughtfully designed and easy to enjoy, this space will offer residents a safe, engaging way to connect with their senses—and with the world around them.
